The Mill’s
History

The origins of The New Mill date back to the time of William I and the Domesday Book, which recorded two mills in this area. Part of the current structure is believed to have been built in 1577, following the destruction of the original mill by fire, hence the name ‘The New Mill’. For over 300 years, the mill was owned by the St Johns family and leased to the Spencers. A later tenant, Mr. Westcott, added the lock bridge and established a sawmill.

The corn grinding equipment and the waterwheel remain in place to this day, proudly displayed at the entrance.
